British Virgin Islands sailing

BVI Sailing

Stunning beauty, relaxed sailing and endless activities surround you in the British Virgin Islands. Trust the trade winds to carry you to whatever you're looking for. Crystal clear waters, boulder-formed caves and picture-perfect beaches combine with oceanfront resorts and restaurants to provide sailors with a colorful wealth of welcoming sites. Easy deep-water island-hops, consistent breezes, line-of-sight navigation in protected waters and numerous anchorages for evenings ashore make this the ideal island paradise for less experienced sailors or those who simply want a more relaxed vacation.

Each morning we set sail to a exciting new day of adventure at our next destination. This is an amazing way to experience the beauty of the Caribbean with sun drenched activities, relaxing atmosphere and the history of pirates that roamed these seas long ago.

Arrival Day:

Shops at beachBoat at mooring

Arrive in Puerto Rico. You can stay a night in Old San Juan or fly straight to Tortola Island: Road Town.
The group will be picked up at the airport and shuttled to the boat. There is a chance to hit the store if anyone needs last minute items. We will spend the night at the Moorings Harbor. Here we will settle in to the boat. There is a restaurant, pool, rental shop, store, bathhouse, and all the little things you need to get prepared to set sail.
We will depart first thing in the morning on the following day.

Day 1:

Dinghy to shore

Road Town to Cooper Island - 6.5 nautical miles • Depart Road Town for Cooper Island, arriving early enough to pick up an overnight mooring ball at Manchoneel Bay. The holding is not good at this anchorage. Dinghy ashore and enjoy the sandy beach, snorkeling and restaurant on the beach.

Day 2/3:

Swimming to shore

Cooper Island to Virgin Gorda - 5 nautical miles to Baths, 9 nautical miles to North Sound • Head for Virgin Gorda, stopping at the Baths for a swim and walk through the rock formations, leaving early enough to get up to the North Sound for your next anchorage, possibly stopping at the Dogs to snorkel and have lunch. Once up at the North Sound, there are plenty of overnight mooring balls and anchorages to choose from. Enjoy a variety of restaurants, water sports, diving, snorkeling or even an island tour.

Day 4:

Group on boat

North Sound to Marina Cay or Trellis Bay - 10 nautical miles • There is good snorkeling at either anchorage. Cruisers may be interested in a book called "Our Island" by Rob White, telling how he and his wife built their house, a portion of which still stands on Marina Cay.

Day 5:

Swimming

Marina Cay or Trellis Bay to Cane Garden Bay - 5.5 nautical miles • Sail down the north side of Tortola to Cane Garden Bay. Dinghy in to enjoy the long sandy beach, waterside restaurants or visit the rum distillery.

Day 6:

Sailing

Cane Garden Bay to Great Harbour - 11 nautical miles • Sail over to Jost Van Dyke, stopping at Sandy Cay en route. Spend the night at Little Harbour or Great Harbour. Great Harbour is the home of Foxy’s, the famous restaurant and beach bar.

Day 7:

Island beaches

Great Harbour to Norman Island - 7 nautical miles • On to Norman Island, the caves and the Indians. Spend the night in The Bight, at anchor or on a mooring ball. Visit the "Willie T" (the William Thornton), a converted lumber schooner which is now a floating restaurant, or go ashore to Pirates Bight beachside.

Final Morning:

Return to Road Town - 7 nautical miles • we will be back for your flight home from Tortola Airport.

* This sample trip will be modified as we sail. Each evening we will look at the map and options for the next day. We will start out each morning early so we can sail for a while in the morning. We may stop along the way or continue to our destination for the next evening. Either way we will have an amazing time sailing and exploring the islands. Everyday we will move to a new island mooring. We will be able to choose from spots with beaches and restaurants to secluded little coves. We will have plenty to do at every spot or simply just relax, we can decide as we go.
